Darren Mehling

Darren Mehling, BA, CSCS, of FREAK Fitness has over 15 years in the fitness industry. He is well known throughout Canada as one of the best physique transformation and performance enhancement specialists and his clients’ results are a testament to what he does.

Nutraguys is thrilled to feature this highly respected fitness powerhouse from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. As a high level athlete and professional coach, known as “Freak Maker” Darren has extensive experience and knowledge in all aspects of what it takes to make his clients champions, both on stage and in everyday life.

As an athlete, Darren has accomplished what most can only dream of. 

Darren is not only a big dude, but he is the strongest bodybuilder to ever step on stage in Manitoba’s history! Before putting on his posing trunks, Darren established numerous junior high and high school track & field records in shot put, and later started competing in strongman competitions in 2002. Over the next few years, Darren broke numerous Provincial and National strength records, winning multiple events at each show he entered. Darren’s brightest highlight of his strongman career was in 2004 when he competed in the TSN televised CSFA Western Finals. Those in attendance and the hundred’s of thousands TSN viewers witnessed Darren break a CFSA record when he deadlifted 805 lbs.

After the CFSA event, Darren was encouraged by his gorgeous wife, CBBF National Fitness Champion and IFBB Figure Pro Christina Mehling, to finally make his mark on the bodybuilding stage. In August 2004, at a starting bodyweight of 338 lbs, Darren dieted down to 218 lbs in just 8 months to win his first MABBA bodybuilding show. Over the next few years Darren proceeded to win two MABBA Provincial Super-heavyweight titles, and ultimately won the 2009 MABBA Overall and Mr. Manitoba titles.

As a coach and co-owner of FREAK Fitness, along with his wife Christina, Darren has helped his clients accomplish body transformations, and achieve goals that most would have thought impossible. In just the past 6 competition seasons alone, Darren’s physique competitors have earned 140 top-3 placings on Novice, Provincial, and National stages within various organizations such as MABBA, CBBF, IFBB, FAME, and WBFF. As well, Darren’s clients have been featured in every major fitness industry publication, both in print and online, and he continues to promote his clients every chance he gets.

In an effort to best serve his ever growing client base, Darren stays on the cutting edge of training, nutrition, and sports psychology by always pursuing new educational opportunities.

Darren is a certified CrossFit Level 1 Coach, Level 1 Barbell Coach, Level 1 Football Coach, NCCP Level 1 Olympic Weightlifting Coach, and Agatsu Level 1 Kettlebell Instructor. He has also earned an undergraduate degree in Sociology with a minor in Psychology, and the highly respected Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) designation. Most recently, Darren was acquired by Muscle Insider Magazine to be a regular contributor and now writes a monthly column called “Manitoba Muscle” in which he highlights amateur and professional physique athletes in Manitoba.

Because of what Darren has accomplished already, what he has planned for himself and his company FREAK Fitness, and what he’s been able to help his clients achieve, it should be no surprise then that his online coaching and personal training business, FREAK Fitness, has exploded!
