In 2010, over 30% of Americans were considered obese and over 15 million Americans were unemployed. The recession is real, these numbers are real and the people unemployed or overweight face this every single day. We caught up with David Kimmerle, a fitness model, bodybuilder and personal trainer to talk about how the recession actually helped him become who he is today. Through hard work, discipline, determination and commitment he managed to beat the odds and turn his life around.

Making a long story much shorter we will start in 2007 when he lost his job and construction business. He lost his house in 2008. David woke up on his birthday, the BIG 30-years-old; broke, angry, overweight, unhealthy, drinking and eating to numb his pain. He couldn’t find a job to save a life and was falling further and further into debt. “I was just a small town construction worker who lost everything. When I finally decided to stop feeling sorry for myself I took a new direction and found a new level of happiness”.

Then another big change, a few months after losing his job the phone rang. This started a chain reaction he never would have imagined in a million years. It was the gym calling to say he was behind on payments, but they’d like to give him a fresh start. David hung up the phone and broke into tears; he knew this was his opportunity to make a change physically and mentally.” I realized I needed to change the perception I had of myself and the perceptions I felt from others. I could take my unemployed hours and improve my health and physical appearance”.

His transformation would start the same day as the symbolic phone call. David was extremely self conscious and embarrassed of his weight so he wore a hoodie at the gym. On that first day back, not really knowing where to start he ran a painful mile on the treadmill then did random exercises until “I felt like my limbs were bleeding”. “I realized just how angry, frustrated and hurt I was”. For more than 50 days in a row and usually twice a day he was in the gym “self-medicating”. Before long he had stopped drinking and eating abundantly and could run five miles and train with proper form. To expedite his results when he wasn’t in the gym or looking for a job,  David spent his time reading about supplements and training. He started using supplements similar to Bodylogix (“the kind I use now”) and following free workout guides and meal plans.

When he was training he whispered affirmations to himself saying, “Mom, Dad, family, friends.” When he wanted to stop, any one of these words would spark the fire within to endure. “I fueled my efforts through supplementation and eating right”. The fat melted away and  he was finally seeing results. Supplements, training and diet changed his entire physique and expedited his results. He was packing on muscle, burning fat, felt great and was less angry.

But the job never came.

Five months into his gym routine while still job-hunting,  he received another very symbolic phone call. This time it was an ex-girlfriend inviting him to work for the day. She was working on a TV commercial and the male talent was a no-show. The director needed someone fast and he was the perfect unemployed body for the job; he arrived a couple hours later and found himself $500 richer. After that, David started envisioning the possibilities of a fitness career. He went out and found the cheapest photographer in town to shoot him, then went from agency to agency trying to find work. “I was repeatedly turned away or required to pay for representation, but I persisted. I really wanted this new job I had created so I trained extremely hard, trying to build something I could sell”. David  sent pictures to everyone he could find in the industry, hitch hiked to the Olympia and found a manager in LA. Finally in 2009 David Kimmerle landed several magazine covers and commercials influencing him to move to L.A where there was more opportunity. Now David Kimmerle is a full-time fitness personality, Cover model, Certified Personal Trainer living in Hollywood. He is now sponsored by Bodylogix and South Seas Skin Care and recently won the NPC Utah- Male Physique category; 1st place and overall.

David Kimmerle left us with a piece of advice.

“If you find yourself unemployed or unhealthy, imagine the -you of your dreams- and just go out and make it happen. With the help from supplements, diet, sweat and tears and a positive attitude, anyone can accomplish their fitness goals. It will not be easy; in fact it might be the hardest thing you’ve ever done, but don’t get discouraged. In the end, your needs and wants will be provided because that’s what happens when you never give up and follow your heart. I know it is cliché and I feel funny even saying it but anyone with faith, direction and endless effort can accomplish anything. I’m a living example of how this is true!”.
