Skip Wood is from a small town in South Dakota and devoted much of his time growing up to athletics. While he was fortunate enough to earn a college basketball scholarship, Skip admits he initially got into fitness & weight training because of how frustrating his collegiate career was. “I needed a healthy outlet and began to hit the weight room to vent those frustrations.”
Looking to escape the cold weather, Skip followed the lead of some family and friends and moved to Arizona after completing his degree in education. “I got a teaching job right away and was able to devote some quality time to working out too. I entered and won a model search for a fitness clothing company and got to do a photo shoot in Santa Monica. During the shoot, I knew fitness modeling was something I wanted to continue to pursue.”
You may recognize Skip from the nationally–aired TV commercials he appeared in for the popular weight-loss product ‘Hydroxycut’. “I’ll never forget the morning I was watching SportsCenter and ‘Hi, I’m Skip from Arizona’ comes on…it was pretty cool. I only had to recite a couple of lines, but I gained a lot of respect for actors, because the pressure's definitely on when the director yells ‘action’. The commercials and print ads were always shot in great places like the Florida Keys or Newport Beach, so it just added to an already great experience.”
Best advice Skip can give to aspiring fitness models or anyone wanting to look their best is to clean up their diets. “I think for the most part, people know what needs to be done in the gym and make time for it. But when it comes to having a sound nutrition plan to help maximize gains, not too many people are disciplined enough to follow through.” Skip says a key factor in eating smart is setting aside time to prepare meals.
Skip is a high school PhysEd teacher and certified strength and conditioning coach in Mesa, AZ. He’s also a now brand ambassador for Nutrabolics supplements and currently preparing to compete in the Men’s Physique Division at the NPC Arizona Open in July.
